News

2nd February 2011

Changed to use new source of elevation data which should be faster and more accurate.

1st June 2009

Created German language version.

22nd May 2009

Migrated to a new server which should be able to handle the load better at peak times.
Also changed to use a new source for elevation data which should be faster and more reliable.
Integrated some stuff from the OpenStreetMap project. There are two new map views that can be selected: OpenStreetMap and OpenCycleMap. The OpenCycleMap is a topological map based on data from the OpenStreetMap project that also shows bike paths.
When using auto routing you now have the option of using data from Google or from the OpenStreetMap project. The OpenStreetMap data has the advantage that it can create routes specifically for bikes. However at the time of writing the road database isn't 100% complete and this can affect the suggested routes.
The Routing API is provided by CloudMade and is based on data from the OpenStreetMap project.
Other new features are:
  • New editing options for converting track points to course points and vice versa. This is useful when adding course points to an existing route.
  • The ability to upload TCX files as well as GPX.

26th August 2008

Added more options for auto routing. You can now choose whether you want the shortest or fastest route and if you want to avoid highways.

16th August 2008

Various minor bug fixes and a few new features:
  • GPX files containg routes as well as tracks can now be uploaded.
  • Option to add elevation data when uploading GPX.
  • Download directly to GPS using the Garmin Communicator Plugin.
  • New terrain map view.
  • Support for more browsers (See supported browsers here).

19th November 2007 - Added Cue Sheets

You can now create cue sheets from courses created with BikeRouteToaster.com. Cue sheets can be printed directly or downloaded in Xml or CSV format for import into other applications.

11th November 2007 - More Auto Routing features and create course from GPX

Extra features have been added for modifying and deleting course sections created with auto routing.
  • If the route created by the system is not as desired then it can be modified by dragging one of the intermediate points to a new location, when the point is dropped a new route will be created through that location.
  • The 'Delete Last' function will delete the whole of the last created section and the 'Delete' funciton will delete the whole of the selected section. This only works while auto routing is turned on, to delete individual points auto routing should be turned off.
  • Courses can now be created from GPX files.

10th October 2007 - Auto Routing Available Again

The auto routing part of the system has been modified to now use the routing functions in the Google Maps API. Also the method of creating routes has been returned to the original method. Changes in this release are as follows:
  • Google API now used for auto routing. Route queries are performed faster, however routes are calculated based on the fastest route by car which is not always ideal. Also point density is higher which will create more accurate routes, but at the expense of performance.
  • Faster and more accurate elevation data.

29th June 2007 - Major Release

Many new features have been added to BikeRouteToaster.com in this major release of the application. These include:
  • Much better editing functions. Ability to move points, insert points etc.
  • Save courses and then reload them later.
  • Changes to how Auto Routing works. See the examples for more details.
  • View an elevation profile of the route.

26th March 2007 - More Features

A number of changes have been made to BikeRouteToaster.com since the last release:
  • New collapsible/moveable control box to increase available screen space.
  • Download in Training Center format.
  • Create tracks at the side of the road when auto routing. This can solve problems in some GPS units when creating an out and in track on the same road.
  • Add Course Point Warnings. Some GPS units don't tell you that you have arrived at a Course Point until you are right on top of it or even passed it. This attempts to minimise that problem.
  • All settings can now be specified in Metric or Imperial units.
For more details on the new features please see the help pages.

18th March 2007 - Added Auto Routing

An 'auto routing' feature has been added to BikeRouteToaster.com. Simply create a track point at the start and end points of your route and a course will be created that follows the roads. The course created will be the shortest route between the 2 points. However please note that auto routing only works for creating courses in North America and Europe.

The following new features have also been added:
  • Downloading of elevation data in the background. You can continue to create track points while the elevation data is being retrieved.
  • Download as gpx option. Courses can now be downloaded in gpx format. Currently this is just a basic implementation that creates track points only. Very little testing has been done on this feature so there may still be a few bugs.

12th March 2007 - BikeRouteToaster.com goes live

I guess you could call this a beta as the application hasn't been thoroughly tested yet. So far it has only been tested with Windows XP / Internet Explorer 7 / Garmin Edge 305.

Any feedback is welcome even if it just to let me know that the application works with your operating system / browser / GPS. Please send feedback to
